The Battle of Gettysburge - Research Paper Example Two divisions of Confederates advanced to Gettysburg on July 1, running west of the town into Federal cavalry and thus starting the skirmish. While the Union’s men were less than 20,000, Lee sent 25,000 men for the battle. After the pushed back Federals regrouped south of the town, Lee ordered Confederate General R.S. Eswell to take measures to sieze the high ground to deter the Federals. The hesitation by General Eswell provided the Union troops with an opportunity to bring in reinforcements and artillery by digging in along the Cemetery Ridge, thus waiving the opportunity for Lee. Meade anticipated increased defense for his position with the arrival of 100,000 men’s reinforcements. Confederate General James Longstreet suggested Lee to leave the Union position alone, considering it nearly impregnable. But Lee believed in the invincibility of his own army and was without cavalry which was of immense help to him during the troop movements. Considering the southern end of the Cemetery Ridge less well defended, Lee resolved to attack the defensive position of the Union Army there. While Lee had ordered General Longstreet to attack on July 2 on 10 a.m., Longstreet did not commence the attack until 4 p.m. This delay further strengthened the position of the Union Army (Soodalter, 2013). The fighting in which some ground was lost by the Federals but maintained a strong defense along the Cemetery Ridge ended around 10:30 p.m. Planning for the next day, Meade decided to wait for attack by Lee, keeping his army in place. Against the suggestion of Longstreet, Lee decided to attack the Union soldiers, considering them battered and almost beaten. Lee tried to gamble the victory of the Battle of Gettysburg by launching the attack from the Union line’s center the next day along the Cemetery Ridge where the attack was expected the least. Pro Choice View On Abortion Philosophy Essay Abortion is one of the most disputable issues discussed all over the world today. Several decades ago abortion was considered only a social issue, but now situation has changed and it has also a political and ethical context. The issue of abortion does not become an important ethical issue as long as modern medicine has not provided its relative safety, and only now, in recent decades, the issue has inflamed a sharp public controversy. Thus, the main aim of this paper is to discuss pro-choice view on abortion. First of all it is necessary to answer the question what an abortion is? Abortion  is the termination of a  pregnancy  by the removal or expulsion from the  uterus  of a  fetus  or  embryo, resulting in or caused by its death. Observing this topic we can see that there are many different points of views around this question and there are, apparently, three main positions on the issue of abortion. At one extreme we see the supporters of preserving life (people who have pro-life position) who would ban abortions in all circumstances: they believe that the government may not encourage the destruction of the embryo or fetus, legalizing abortion. At the other extreme are advocates of free choice (pro-choice position): they believe that the law should not restrict the freedom of choice for the mother, because all pregnant women should have the opportunity to request an abortion. Intermediate position is occupied by those who believe abortion is permissible only in certain c ases (for example, when the pregnancy is dangerous for the mothers life or was the result of rape or incest), as well as those who believe that it should not be the main method of birth control. In this part we are going to concern our attention on pro-choice abortion and according to Colker, we see that Pro-choice abortion is the belief that women have the right to choose to abort a baby from their body. The pro-choice view is that a baby does not have human rights within the mothers womb. The people of the United States never voted on or supported this pro-choice position. Actually, it was the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion as a result of Roe vs. Wade on January 22, 1973. (Colker, 1992). Analyzing contemporary situation it becomes obvious that movement for the legalization of abortion in recent years has also become a well-organized and politically active force: it is supported by a series of specially created organizations nationwide, and tens of major religious groups. Opponents of the ban on abortion put forward four main ethical arguments: 1. No person shall be entitled to compel a woman to preserve the pregnancy against her will. 2. We should not give birth to unwanted children. 3. Abortion was never subjected to the ban, if the legislators were not men. (Or, as one aphorism says, if men could get pregnant, abortion rights would be considered sacred.) 4. If a woman has no right to freely dispose of own body, including control of reproductive function, then there is no real freedom at all. Advocates of abortion rights typically originate from the fact that the government should not intervene in the privacy of women deciding for them the fate of a pregnancy. They believe that every woman should have a choice to abort or not, at the same time, they stress that such choice does not force anyone to a particular decision. In addition, it is noted that no one should be required by law to risk own health, and yet at the complete prohibition of abortion, many pregnant women are exposed to the dangers of childbearing and childbirth, as well as unsafe criminal abortions. What supporters of pro-choice position have to say about how to deal with the right to self-actualization of the fetus, with its right to life, with its right to the pursuit of happiness? Pro-choice supporters proceed from the concept of social development of personality. Since the fetus has no idea about own future, about own personality, then it can not be self-consciousness. Once there is no consciousness, then the concept of consent to it is not applicable. (Jelen Wilcox, 2003). Are these arguments are more persuasive than the arguments against abortion? Nobody can definitely say yes or no, because there is no one single view on this issue in contemporary society. Thinking about different points of view on pro-life and pro-choice abortion Levitt Dubner stated that pro-choice position allows to control criminal situation in the country. They explained that decades of research indicate that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are much more likely to become criminals than others. (Levitt Dubner, 2005). Thus, abortions allow to control criminal situation in the country due to their distance effect, because years later, these unborn children are not replenished the ranks of criminals and crime stopped. Debating this topic and looking at the problem from ethical and psychological side we should remember about the situation that the woman, who decided to make abortion, found herself in psychological crisis, and sometimes she is also found herself in a great despair, but we can contradict to above mentioned women other pregnant woman who wait for their babies and are full of happiness and excitement that in the nearest future they will become mothers and will see their little babies. There are many different people, and different situations, but there is one variable childs lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ It is necessary to think deeply about how it can happen that a child for one woman is a great grief and they are willing to pay money for childs death, but for others childs birth is so good that they go to any expenses to have a baby. It is a description of dual character of one situation around childs lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Thus, according to Staggenborg, despite all the support for abortion, one of the important pro-choice facts is that those who raise pro choice issues to strengthen their cause are not pro abortion. They take the right to as a womans freedom to her body and life. However, we must remember that abortion should not cloud the sanctity of life. It is important to bear in mind the  pros and cons of abortions  before taking any decisions regarding ones pregnancy. (Staggenborg, 1994). Taking into consideration all the above stated it is possible to conclude that in discussing the moral aspects of abortion we usually used many arguments in favor of one or another position. Whatever our personal view, it is important to be able to recognize the ways of argumentation in ethical reasoning, which in reality is not as logical as it might seem at first glance. It is necessary to remember that every human child should be wanted, nurtured, loved and cherished. In such a way birth control and abortion are the part of necessary policy in this direction. Choices in this case should belong to the pregnant woman, and only her wish to save or not to save a child should be the main argument in pro-choice position.

It was a deadly plague that spread through Europe and Asia from the mid 1330’s -50’s. The cause of death for twenty million people, the survivors thought it was God’s anger at something they had done and, therefore, the end of the world. In Venice, ninety thousand died and in Florence, half the population. There were three types of the plague. The Bubonic plague was the most common, the Pneumonic Plague was less common and the Septicaemic Plague was the most deadly and rarest of them all. Historians believe that the plague was caused by fleas that came to Europe from Asia on ships. At the time, people thought they were being punished by God and that they were being abandoned to fend for themselves. They thought the plague was being spread by bad smells. The plague is believed to have originated from central Asia in 1331, when the wild rats moved to live around the people, probably due to flooding and earthquakes. From central Asia, the plague spread to China and India before moving west to Iran. By 1345, the disease had spread along the trading routes to Europe. It is thought that Italian trading ships that were at Caffa also brought the plague to Constantinople, the capital of Turkey, and then to Eastern and Western Europe. The plague was then spread from person to person by bad hygiene and because the sick and dying weren’t isolated from the rest of the world. It affected more people in cities that in rural areas. The very successful Technology Industry based company has been very successful and been named as the best employer to work for several times since it opened its doors in 1998. We will look at their Mission Statement and business strategy and how they use employee benefits to draw and keep the best employees. Mission and Business Model Googles Mission Statement is one that does not include a lot of the components that are used to evaluate a quality mission statement. It fails to accompany the customer, concern of survivability or public image amongst other things, but at the sometime this small open minded Mission Statement accomplices the company as a whole and their â€Å"Open Innovation† philosophy. (Jurevicuis, 2013) The Google business model is a ‘Business Model Canvas’. As a world leading Technology Company and the most popular search engine on the internet. They have built an extremely successful primary pay stream with the Cost per Click (CPC) in which advertisers pay each time a user clicks on their advertisement. (Osterwalder, 2013) This has accounted for most of the revenue the company generates despite recent ventures into new markets. They have started purchasing companies such as Nest to attempt to generate new revenue streams as well as start the Google Apps, Android and other opportunities. With this movement Google has steadfast and is continuing to stay with the same business model. Googles Culture and Leaders Google’s culture is to keep an open environment the same as a startup company would be between employees and management. They continue to fill their ranks with people that believe in what they are doing and taking care of those people to retain them and push them to be creative with what they enjoy. They believe in working with smaller teams to promote team work, but encourage to help where you can even if it is to help another team in a different area. Google has identified people that they want as their leaders and management is consistent and fair people with their decisions. People that are predictable with their decision making fosters freedom within their teams as they know what to expect. They have employees rate their managers twice a year so the company can help develop their managers where their weaknesses are and make them better leaders. (Bryant, 2013 Fostering Innovation with Amenities Google founders have built the company the way they wanted and what they would want their employers would do for them. They have created an environment that fosters innovation and creativity with the freedom to purse your interest as well as accomplishing your team goals. They want a complete open culture that is felt within a new startup company would have to make the employees feel free to talk to anyone within the company, including the founders, at any time. They offer amenities such as free meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), Free concierge services to help you run errands, Free Shuttle Service, gyms and workout classes, and the 80/20 Rule amongst other things. The most talked about amenity that Google offers their employees is the free meal program. The cafes have some of the best chef’s from around the Bay Area and create some of he best food in the area. This helps to keep employees working more areas as they do not have to leave the  campus for an hour to get lunch, or to need to leave early to cook dinner. This has also helped with productivity because the employees do not feel that sluggishness from being hungry. This has also lead to the dreaded â€Å"Google 15† in regards to the 15 pounds people gain in the first year from all the great food. At least they do have the gyms, climbing walls and classes to help with that. One of the perks that Google offers their employees is the 80/20 rule. This rule allows for employees to work 1 day a week on passion projects that they believe will benefit the company. (Smith, 2013) There has been some quality innovations come from this ability such as Google Chrome, and Google Plus. This also is a good way for the employees to feel free and reduce stress as they can spend time on the things they love. My Culture View Googles business philosophy of putting their employees at the top of their priorities and give them their freedoms is wonderful environment to be in. They foster this work environment that helps an employee to become the best they can as they have a freedom to think outside the box and be innovative and bring what you know and what you’re passionate about to the table. When an employer takes care of their employees the top talent stays with the company and is loyal to them. It also attracts the top new coming talent to want to work for them. This gives the employer the ability to choose the talent they want, instead of the talent selecting whether they want to be there. This works great for Google but not all parts of their perks may not be the best approach for all companies. I think having something like the 80/20 rule would not work for something like a call center in which it is more of a directive driven position. I believe all companies can see what google has done and take notice and look at themselves to see where they can take aspects to help them make their companies more desired to work for and be loyal to. I personally would love to work at Google or a company that treat their employees with respect, provides freedom in work, and promotes innovation and the ability to better yourself as you help benefit the  company.
